Story

It’s often the most simple things in appearance that are the most difficult to achieve, and to do it well. After 2 years of development, Superstitch introduced its first T-Shirt, the LR16. The development process began with finding the ideal Tsuriami jersey knitting partner in Japan that could deliver the uncompromising fabric quality that we were searching for. Only a handful of Tsuriami, or loopwheel, knitting machines are still in operation today, and are mainly found in Japan. Together with the limited numbers of workshops still in operation, and the slow and natural knitting process, the prototyping and testing of the LR16 was extended and extensive. The result was worth the time invested – the LR16 is an enduring staple that is exceptional in its combined qualities of ultra-softness and weightlessness, and incredible durability and longevity.

Construction

As a garment first and foremostly intended for daily real-life wear, the proportions of the LR16 were meticulously considered to achieve comfort, freedom of movement and wearability. The regular fit is inspired by 40’s American sportswear archetypes, with a length that is just right to be worn comfortably tucked in or out. Being tubular, the body of the LR16 is seamless and exhibits balanced proportions.

As part of the uncompromising construction, the shoulder seams are finished by genuine 40’s-style flatlock stitching – rare to find these days – which allow the seams to be smooth and flat, invisible to the feel, and the interfacing fabrics to move naturally with the body. The neckband is close to the neck, made in broad ribbed knitting, which ensures a soft structure, and, as it relaxes with wash and wear, adapts to the anatomy of the wearer as if knitted for them. The single square pocket is inspired by a ritual of the 40s – just the right size to hold a packet of cigarettes.

Finally, the slightly extended length of the set-in sleeves was an intentioned consideration that balances comfort with elegance. Many of these integral details may not be immediately noticeable to the eye, but will certainly be felt when you wear it – or rather, ‘not’ felt: the LR16 promises to be the most weightless and comfortable T-shirt that you will ever wear.

Fabric

The LR16 starts from the fabric, a jersey we created with a small Japanese factory, knitted exclusively for us on old Tsuriami (or loopwheel) knitting machines. “Tsuriami” (吊り編み) means “hanging knitting”, denoting the way the fabric is suspended as it’s knit. This technique can only be achieved by using vintage loopwheel machines that date back to the early 1900s. These machines knit slowly, around just 1 meter of fabric per hour, working gently and naturally. Because the yarn isn’t under tension during knitting, the resulting fabric retains a soft and cushiony feel, as if woven with air itself.

The fabric is at once textured to the eye, substantial to the touch, but incredibly soft and lightweight. The true nature of the LR16 jersey is revealed over time, becoming even softer and more weightless with wear and wash.

Knitting jersey in a continuous tubular loop ensures both comfort and exceptional longevity, thanks to its fewer stress points. Therefore despite being extremely soft, the LR16 is strong and durable. Our extensive testing demonstrates that it holds its shape wash after wash, and becomes even more beautiful in texture and feel.

The LR16 T-shirt exists in two colourways: natural cotton, and over-dyed black, dying being applied to the jersey pre-assembly.
