The LR01 was the first jean launched by Superstitch, coinciding with the opening of our rue Racine permanent production workfront. We believed that this was the most fitting choice for our inaugural product. Among all vintage jean archetypes, the 1972 – 1974 501 ’66s type was the most classic and timeless – a fundamental jean construction that suits both men and women of every body type and lifestyle.
This classic jean was the result of one and a half year of development, with the first production completed just as the world locked down during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, this initial small production of 100 pieces was sold out within just two months of launch. Since then, the LR01 has become an icon of the brand, remaining one of its staple offerings, and continues to be coveted by our global customers.
The LR01 evokes the 1972 – 1974, 501 ’66s type construction: high waist, true straight leg, button fly. The fit is flattering on almost any body type, being neither slim or wide leg, but a good balance in between.
True to the period, chain stitch construction is used in all parts of the jeans where possible, respecting the exact needle gauge of the original ’66s type, achieving the same visual effect as a true vintage 501. The front pockets are secured with copper and aluminium capsule style rivets and burrs especially designed for us. The LR01 embodies perfectly the intended imperfections, faithfully and meticulously reproducing every known defect of the 501 ’66s type that existed in the original jeans of that period, like the thunder watch pocket and twisting leg.
Faithful to the 501 ’66s type, the LR01 fabric is a 14 oz unsanforized short fibre selvedge denim. And just like in the period of the heyday of the 501, our fabric is woven on rare old electric shuttle looms. The fabric is developed and woven especially for Superstitch, in a small weaving factory in Okayama Japan.
The choice of short fibre yarn means that indigo dye is more quickly released in washing, more readily achieving the signature ’66s type fade (it takes about 2 years of wear for a truly satisfying fade, while the XX type would take a minimum of 3 years).
The shuttle loom that weaves the LR01 fabric is calibrated at a specific loosened tension that gives a ‘peppered’ look to the top side of the denim. The exterior facet begins flat to the touch, while the interior facet expresses an uneven texture as if slightly aerated. With washing, this texture is conveyed to the exterior facet in irregular fading, forming a signature horizontal and vertical progression in the weft and warp that is typical of the 501 ’66s type.
The LR01 WH is based on the same fabric as the LR01 indigo, though uncoloured, and therefore retains the natural sergé tone.
