The LR01 was the first jean launched by Superstitch, coinciding with the opening of our rue Racine permanent production shopfront. We believed that this was the most fitting choice for our inaugural product. Among all vintage jean archetypes, the 1972 – 1974 501 ’66s type is the most classic and timeless — a fundamental jean construction that suits both men and women of every body type and lifestyle.
This classic jean was the result of one and a half year of development, with the first production completed just as the world locked down during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, this initial small production of 100 pieces was sold out within just two months of launch. Since then, the LR01 has become an icon of the brand, remaining one of its staple offerings, and continues to be coveted by our global customers.
Now, several years after its first release, the LR01 returns in an entirely new evolution, focused on its most essential element: the fabric. The redevelopment process took months of collaboration with Okayama artisans to bring the LR01 ever closer to the spirit of its 1972 – 1974 inspiration period, while preserving its form as the brand’s defining staple. The new fabric is woven at low tension using a legendary original Toyoda GL9 shuttle loom to produce a denim that feels alive, tactile, and rich with irregularity.
This final version of the LR01 also includes other new details including newly developed buttons and a new paper patch.
The LR01 evokes the 1972 – 1974, 501 ’66s type construction: high waist, true straight leg, button fly. The fit is flattering on almost any body type, being neither slim nor wide leg, but a good balance in between.
True to the period, chain stitch construction is used in all parts of the jeans where possible, respecting the exact needle gauge of the original ’66s type, thereby achieving the same visual effect as a true vintage 501. The front pockets are secured with copper and aluminium capsule-style rivets and burrs especially designed for us. The LR01 embodies perfectly the intended imperfections, faithfully and meticulously reproducing every known defect of the 501 ’66s type that existed in the original jeans of that period, like the thunder watch pocket and twisting leg.
With the 2025 redevelopment of this model, the LR01 retains its iconic ’66s type construction, with all core details preserved. The new buttons and paper patch mark a subtle but important evolution.
The LR01 BK is the latest addition to the LR01 offering. For years, clients have requested a black version of this model, but until now, our owner Arthur has resisted, feeling that black-black denim often lacks the visual depth, due to the lack of contrast between the warp and weft yarns (both being black). We finally decided to answer the demand, but only on one condition: that the LR01 Black fabric would be an exceptionally textured fabric to counter the visual flatness. This was answered with the 2025 redevelopment of the LR01 fabric, woven at low tension. Both the warp and weft yarns of the LR01 BK are sulphur-dyed, rather than with black pigment. This dying technique was chosen for its natural fading, promising a black jean that ages subtly over time.
